Hunger & Homelessness Awareness Week

During the week of November 15 – 22, 2020, organizations and people across San Antonio hold events to raise awareness for the
issues of hunger and homelessness that exist for many neighbors in our city. Check out the community calendar of events below to see how you can participate.

Event description: Join SAMMinistries in helping to overcome homelessness by participating in a drive, creating a Recipe in a Pot, or providing welcome basket items for a family moving into their new home. Click here to learn more.

Mon, Nov. 16 – 20, Edgewood ISD Food Drive

Location: 900 S San Eduardo (Emma Frey Building 1)
Time: 8:00AM – 4:30PM
Event description: The food collected will be distributed to families in need and donated to the EISD food pantry.

Tues. Nov. 17, Action & Opportunity Federal Benefits Sign-up

Location: Virtual
Time: 1:00PM – 5:00PM
Event description: Alamo College District Advocacy Centers, in partnership with the San Antonio Food Bank, can help students register for federal SNAP (food stamp) benefits. Alamo College students can call the District helpline, (210) 486-1111, and they’ll be referred to their home school campus to complete a SNAP application.

Wed. Nov. 18, Chris Madrids Burgers + SA Homelessness Awareness

Location: Christian Assistance Ministry, 110 McCullough Ave.

Event description: Chris Madrids will be hosting a hamburger donation at CAM for our neighbors experiencing homelessness.

Nov. 15 – 22, San Antonio Public Library’s Featured Stories

Location: 11 San Antonio libraries listed here.
Time: 10:00AM – 5:00PM
Event description: San Antonio Public Library and City of San Antonio Department of Human Services will be displaying photos and stories of our neighbors at risk of and experiencing food insecurity and homelessness. We are supporting the efforts of our San Antonio Food Bank who have been instrumental in addressing these needs.

Wed. Nov. 18, America Recycles Day Annual Fashion Show

Event description: Palo Alto College will celebrate its 10th Annual America Recycles Day Fashion Show; this event teaches how to create a more sustainable environment. Click here to register.

Wed. Nov. 18, In this Together by CAM

Location: Christian Assistance Ministry, 110 McCullough Ave

Event description: This gathering of partners (SA Hope Center, Any Woman Can, Canines for Christ, and Faith Based Institute) at CAM is meant to offer resources to the people we serve.

Event description: Volunteer/Service Day Opportunity! Palo Alto and the San Antonio Food Bank host this pop-up market to provide healthy food to students, employees and the community through no contact drive-thru events. Volunteers can sign up here.

Sun, Nov. 22, Love to Recycle Event – Jarnell’s Wish Antiques & Yoga

Event description: This event covers how to use biodegradable products, going organic & its liberation, and how to become grounded everyday without intense meditation or vigorous exercise.

Sun, Nov. 22, St. Paul United Methodist Community Thanksgiving Drive-Thru Lunch

Location: Parking lot of church, 508 Center St
Time: 11:30AM – 2:00PM
Event description: St Paul United Methodist Church will host a drive-thru Thanksgiving lunch for our neighbors experiencing homelessness. Local health department COVID-19 protocol will be practiced.

Sun, Nov. 22, St. Paul United Methodist School Supplies Drive

Location: Parking lot of church, 508 Center St
Time: 11:30AM – 2:00PM
Event description: School supplies collected will benefit students at Bowden Academy.

Now – Dec. 18, SA Youth “Stuff-a-Stocking” Holiday Drive

Location: Collection box available at 1215 West Poplar
Event description: Now through Dec. 18, you can spread holiday cheer to students by making a $25 online donation here to cover the cost of (1) holiday stocking for a child. Stocking stuffers such as bouncy balls, playdough, mini sketch pads, markers, chalk, interactive games, stickers can be donated at the location above. Mon, Nov. 23, Mobile Shower Unveiling

Location: San Fernando Resource Hub, 319 W. Travis St.
Time: 1:30PM
Event description: City of San Antonio Mobile shower initiative will be unveiling the new Mobile Shower Program at the San Fernando Hub. Sponsoring parties include Council District 1 office of Roberto Trevino and City of San Antonio Department of Human Services.

Ongoing, San Fernando Hub Volunteer Opportunity

Location: 319 W. Travis St.
Time: 10:00AM – 1:30PM daily
Event description: The City of San Antonio, Department of Human Services has coordinated Homeless Care Hubs throughout the community to serve the City’s vulnerable homeless population during the COVID-19 health crisis. Volunteers are needed daily. Every team member will be provided with gloves and masks. Social distancing, hand washing, and other health practices will be enforced. Please sign up here.
